With your skill sets and lack of the proper tools, budget and shear amount of work required it might be best if you found someone that didn't know a lot about XJ's and sell it. That may be the only way you may be able to get some of your money back, then look for a nice "Stock XJ" and build it properly the first time, not someone else's headache and half done jobs.
Don't mean to be harsh but that's a lot of work and little money to do it with, if done cheaply you will do it over and over costing more money than having done it right the first time.

OK....I'm confused......
IN your original post, you say it drives good, then in a follow-up post, you say the steering isn't safe (quoted both above)
Which is it ??
And there is a reason rough country stuff is so much cheaper........
And reading your posts above, I'd have to agree with Basslicks & Fred/N0AZZ above..........bail while you can and before you sink a lot of money into it.

Its going up for sale as soon as I get it cleaned up.

So both axles are from a Chevy, eh? Don't know if u know this but Chevy front axles are passenger side drop. Meaning the pumpkin is on the passenger side. Jeep Dana 30's are drivers side drop.
So.... To swap to a Dana 30 in front, you are gonna have to find another transfer case and swap that in place.

Here's the thing in short, you purchaced a trail rig only in hopes of making it streetable on the cheap. Sorry, but NOTHING is cheap in this hobby. I know you're young so don't sweat it as we've all made some type of this decision as well. Your cheapest and easiest option is to just get another XJ to use as your platform. It would be more reliable as a student as well. Not saying you can't have a decent ride to go on trails with but your education and reliable travel to should be priority.
On the upside, there are a vast number of members here, some have posted, that can help walk you through some affordable and dependable mods as you progress. As great as it would be to have a built rig from the start, remember, Rome wasn't built in a day. Besides, with a fresh platform that YOU personally built/upgraded, you will have a better sense of pride and joy once completed.

And your right, I am going sell it.
I'm not young tho, (36) but apparently I am dumb. Knowing what I do now, I would never have bought this thing.
I thought it would take just a little work to make it a nice trail rig, that could still be driven on the street. But I was wrong. And I am now paying for that mistake.
Yep. And I don't think the axle is worth fixing my self.

Looks like a frankenstein project. That thing needs to have the axles and suspension ripped out from under it and start all over again. But that's the way I look at it

Yep both are from a chevy. Front was converted to drivers side drop.Actually I bought a mall crawler with the hopes of making it a trail rig.

Anyways, not insulting your rig, but that was not a mallcrawler as the PO thought. Thats closer to swamp buggy/mud bogger only status.

I am shocked tho that you say the steering is unsafe, but you let your wife drive it and say it drives good.
If it is unsafe, in my opinion, NO ONE should be driving it.
Unsafe steering could get you or someone else injured or killed.

Yeah I can't quite figure it out either, I think he needs coils and shocks too, maybe sway bar links but that's all less than 1500 even if you get somewhat decent stuff.

I might be wrong but a retubed Chevy d44 should be decently valuable if you take it off your Jeep, aren't they high pinion with flat top knuckles? you could sell that and recoup some money.

I say the steering is not safe because its all heim joints, and cheap ones at that. But it works. I would never use them for steering on a DD vehicle if I was building it. And I don't like them. But they work, and have not given us any problems. I just don't trust them to last more then another year or 2 before one fails.
If I had another option, she would not be driving this thing. But she can not drive my car, (WRX with a manual trans and heavy clutch) And my Silverado is a POS. And I am still making a vary large payment on it as its only got 10k miles on it and its only 8 months old. So I don't currently have any other option as we both need a vehicle, and she drive 3 miles round trip to work if that, and I drive 70 or so and have to take the freeway.
4 shocks.
Steering stabilizer.
Track bar with body side mount.
Long arm kit.
Pitman arm.
4 wheels. (current wheels are 6 lug, new axles are 5x4.5)
Front springs. (current springs are from a 3.5" lift, and are sagging a little.
Bump stops. (Mine are all missing.)
Brake lines. (The ones I have will not work for the front, and my rear is to short.)
I do not have sway bars on it any more. So I don't need sway bar links.
And 4:11 gears.
I have been told its worth $250 by several people. And that my rear axle is worth $150.
Front springs a 3.5" sky jackers so there worth $25 if I clean them up. (Maybe)
Wheels are worth $200 or so.
And long arms, and steering are worthless. Front shocks are new so $40 for those.
Rear springs are stock with an add a leaf, so there worth $10 tops.
Rear shocks are junk.
So at most I have about $775 in used parts.
I was counting on that money to help pay off the parts I would need to fix this thing.
I was going to go clean it up nice and take pics of it today so I can put it up for sale, but I just got sprayed in the face with hot oil by my stupid lawn mower,
so I think its beer time now that I have had a shower, and cooled off a bit. (Still smell like oil and gas even after a 30 min shower)

I had a buddy that has a nice 220 welder and was willing to help me with what ever I needed.
But he was offered a good job half way across the country a few months ago and he took it.
I have asked around, and no one will help me. Shops want to much and I cant swing it, and any one I find with welder and a place to do the work ether wants me to pay them almost as much as the shops want, or they have a 110 welder just like mine, but they are willing to do it for cost. I don't trust a 110 welder for welding axle brackets and such. It will never get the penetration needed.
I would need the following parts to get the axles I have under this Heep.

Track bar with body side mount.

If you can find me good stuff for that price, and get everything on the list above I would be happy to keep this thing!

4 shocks, you could get nicer ones but that's more money and these should do and they have built in bumpstops

steering stabilizer, not entirely necessary

chevy c1500 front brake line 6" longer than stock and supposedly bolt in
I've heard early 2000s dodge Dakotas have a rear line 6" longer than stock, personally I run a rear YJ line 3" longer than stock, that's up to you but you'll definatly want long lines up front since the wj brake calipers having low mounts for the lines.

cheapest, yet high quality long arm kit on the market that I'm aware of

super cheap 15x8 steelies I know you have some 16" tires but at this price it might be better to sell the tires with the wheels you have now, also if you get 3.75 inch backspacing it should work with your WJ brakes.
only thing I missed is the pitman arm, if you want a drop arm they're all over the internet for oem you may check craigslist or a local junkyard.
Good luck

Hells yeah! That's what I'm talking about. You da man Kyle!
OP, I think you're making a mountain out of a mole hill. Kyle just gave you links to everything you need. Between that list and the stuff you already have you could turn that thing into one nice *** rig in a weekend. Sorry you're having so much car trouble, sucks when crap like that stacks up on you. IMHO you should do a little more research, then fix that bad boy up. Best of luck and feel free to ask any questions you may have
