Default transmission swap...

So I'm in the process of rebuilding my 87 XJ. and one of the things i hope to do during this is swap my 4spd auto for a manual tranny. Me and my dad have done some research in hopes to figure out the best way to do this, and this is what we found.

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/amc_i6.htm

now if you go here and scroll about halfway down you will see the topic "Transmission Compatibility" then it shows multiple trannys that will work with the I6. Im just looking for some imput on this/these. which tranny would you use, what works, any other site, ect?

The AX15 is the most common manual that came in XJs. They are a dime a dozen and cheap. That one should be fine for your needs and it allows you to use all XJ parts to get it installed.

An AX15 would be the easiest. Another one to look at is the SM420. It will be more work but then you have 7:1 granny low.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone has installed a Novak Adapters AX-15? They seem to be pricey at $1540 for a unit, or going down to Denver and buying one from the transmission shop for $800 and change. Novak says it has every available upgrade and that they're made with better materials. Any substance to these claims? Are they worth the money?

As cheap and readily available as the regular AX15 is, I would stick with an OEM unit.
