transmission problem
Hi. i have 1998 xj sport. the transmission stucks in 1 gear when driving in 4L mode. 4x2 and 4H modes are working without any problem. some guys who know this car said it is not possible because if the transmission broke down, it will not work in other modes. do you have any idea what the problem is?

That's normal. It's not broken. The 4:1 gear reduction in 4-Low creates so much torque that the transmission doesn't need to shift. It's designed to stay in 1st gear to protect the drivetrain. Everything is working as it should.

Silly question, but how do you know? What conditions are you in to be in 4L. Are you giving lots of gas? For the hell of it I tried going down the block today at slow to moderate speeds...dry normal road. Fairly quickly it went shift/shift/ shift. I was doing about 20 at 2000 rpm. From a dead stop...first gear lasted about 3 sec...2nd maybe 5...same for 3rd. Don't know if it actually made 4th. I was not very heavy on pedal...maybe lighter than usual...didn't want to stress the drivetrain on a dry road

My shift time might have been faster than i stated, i was worried about over reving and other issues since I couldn't remember the last time in 4l. 20 mph in 4L and first would have been well above 3500, also the engine, tranny were cold...hot fluid might have changed the shift curve
