I run full synthetic ATF in mine.
I use to run generic ATF that was compatible with ATF+4, Mercon, Dexron, etc..

Transfer Case Fluid

NV231 Mopar Dexron III, ATF +3 Type 7176, Automatic Transmission FluidNV242 Mopar Dexron III, ATF +3 Type 7176, Automatic Transmission Fluid
Or equivalent ATF, ie. full synthetic ATF. Check the bottle, it should say what it's compatable with.

Just don't forget to fill it up. I forgot once and stretched the chain. BANG BANG BANG under load.

I use the same fluid I use in my transmission. Valvoline DEX/MERC. It was the closest to the original specs of DexIII I could find at napa.

yes, i use ATF+4 in my NP 231J and it works fine. i used to use Dextron III cause i had a whole bunch of it, but since GM stopped selling it then i am keeping my supply for my GM 6 speed tranny.
