I'm getting ready to put new gears in my jeep which is no problem. I am worried about how to break them in though seeing as it's not going to be driven on the road. Any advice?

Is it remotely street legal? If it is you could just drive it around for little stuff or go to work in it a few times

Well I want to take it to the dunes in about a month, but I'll be in North Dakota till then. So I'll have to have a friend break em in.

Probably the safest way to do it

I don't know how to do gears, but it doesn't seem like that would be enough. There would be very little force exerted on the gears that way, considering it doesn't need to actually move the Jeep. Just an idea.

the heat is what you want for break in, not so much the force.

so long as it gets nice and hot on the jack stands then it should be fine for break in.

2 ways to do it some say take it easy and break them in over 250 to 500 miles and change the gear oil, the others say break em in the way you drive it! It's really up to you personally I have yet to see a ring and pinion break due to not being broken In properly

ideally when I worked in shops we would send a guy out for a good half hour in the lot and he would do 15-20 minutes of forward figure 8s then reverse figure 8s. then we would do another 5 mins forward to break it in. ad if there was additive it would get it hot and worked into the gear lube. DO NOT just go wheel the rig. if you ever installed gears especially if it is a posi or locking differential you will most likely cause premature wear or ruin the gear without break in. I know the 500 miles recommended break in period is not possible but make the gears get a work out. prior to offroading. even if you spend 30-45 minutes on a beginner trail before hitting it hard. I would avoid the prolonged figure 8s. It can overheat and damage spider gears
