Rear is an oddball Chevy van FF D60 with factory 4.56s, homebuilt cover made of 1/4" plate and welded. Soon to be disc braked.

I was just going to ask. As in my xj I've got the waggy 44 front and amc20 rear. I just toasted the amc 20 and getting harder to find parts was going to get a 8.8 as I have seen that's what a lot of xj guys do. I've read lots on d35 being bad. But for me to buy a 8.8. And re gear and mods to fit xj . Not going to be too cheep and I have a chance to get a d35 456 gears molly shafts and a arb air locker for under the 400$ mark just wondering is it worth it with all the upgrades to go the d35. ? I know the arb is worth it and $ for $ the 35 is a sweet deal , And later get a 8.8 and slowly build it up till I blow the 35
Thanks for any info

A d35 is not worth the $$, ARB or not. It's simply too small of an axle. The AMC20 isn't much better, so I wouldn't put money into that either.

If a 8.8 is out of the picture, consider a Chrysler 8.25 - found in many XJs 1991-2001, 1996-2001 being the better (more spline) version. Both will bolt into your XJ without any modification - just need to find one with gearing that matches yours.

havnt modded mine yet but wonderin what opptions i have for splines in a 90 dana 30? would i have more options with a jk d30, or would the bolt in jk d44 be best for splines (hesetant on jk d44 because i heard they are just d30 housings with d44 internals)?

It's not strong enough for my tire size and wheeling style. 38s are pushing the limits even with chromos.

If you plan on 37s or larger, go 60. I would feel ok with 37s on my setup but I'm more than happy with 35s.

Stay away from the JK D30, they tend to break at the inner C. JK D44 is a real 44 unlike the TJ version but it's not a bolt in and it's 3" wider than stock.

It's not.
It still has the same tubes, C's, and Knuckles as the JK D30.
