Tire Rim Combo question
I need some "expert" advise. I went to buy some new tires & rims today from discount tire. got a set of 33x12.5x15 Duratrac's and 15x8 rims, that was until it was time to pay. Discount tire will not mount a 12.5" tire on an 8" rim.
The question: Do I stick to 33" tires and go to a 15x10" rim or go to a 31" tire and keep the 15x8" rims. The price is about the same either way.
I don't want to go to the 16" rim. The cost is too high. Another $20/rim and $60/tire
Additional info:
99' XJ with 4.5 inch JY lift
4.0 engine with 215K miles
3.55 gears

Have you thought about just having them mounted locally? Many tire companies require the wheel width to be within 4 inches of the tire width before they will mount tires.
I had a local tire shop mount my BFG KM2 35-12.50 r15s on steel 15x8 rims and I'm sure if you call around you can find somewhere to mount yours.

Just get someone else to mount them. I've had 12.50s mounted on 7" rims and never had any issues. I even ran 35x15.50s on a 10" rim on my yota and had good luck with them. I ran a 10" rim with 35x12.50s for a short time and couldn't air down past 10psi and popped beads just about every ride. Put them on an 8" rim and ran 8psi and never popped a bead.

Thanks guys, I think I'm going to go with the 33's on 15x10's. I called and talked to the manager and got him to take $100 off the combo. I don't think I could get anyone else around here that low.
I haven't run lower than 10psi on the trail before so hopefully shouldn't have too much trouble with keeping them on the rim.
Just pissed when I shell out that kind of money and don't get what I want.

go with 15x10 they look way better, im running 15x10 and my friend has 15x8 his tires look tiny cause the rim sucks the sidewall in so much. if its driven on the street most the time and your not airing down to much id do 15x10's!

15 x 10s suck. Im MUCH happier with the 15x8s I have now. I got tired of poppping tires off the bead. The people at discount tire are morons.

Because its a liability issue for them. If the tire manufacturer says 9"-11" rim width then they are only going to mount it on those sizes and thats it. Im sure they have been sued by some ****less moron over something like that before and now they go by the book.

The tire manufacturers association suggests not mounting a tire on a rim that is more than 4 inches smaller than the tire width. They lump all tires into one category and don't take vehicle use into account. [ In other words 98% of the tires are used on highway vehicles where airing down isn't a concern. ]
