Tire/gearing?
My XJ has 33" Bigfoot XTs with stock 3.55 gearing in Dana 30 and Chrysler 8.25. My next upgrade is a Lock Rite and gears.I plan on going to 35s when I need tires next,I was planning on 4.56 or 4.88 gears but most people are saying that is to much for a daily driver, others say it is not enough. None of these people have XJs so I have joined this forum in hopes of communicating with people who know. I am trying to make the most capable and reliable jeep possible on my budget. I have had seven FJ 40s from stock to wild but love my XJ, it has really impressed me and the people I wheel with of its capabilitys thus far in my build. So I have been told anything from 3.73 to 5.29, what shoud I get for best off road performance and still have decent hi-way speed.

Yep, what he said. I recently moved from Cotopaxi,Co. About a hour and a half to your west-southwest. Ran 34s on 4.10s. Not so great. Friend had 35 and 4.88s. Worked very good. He didn't go down I-25 at 80-85 like everybody else but rpm was not excessive.

I've heard that 4.56's are pretty good for 33's. But being in Colorado you may like 4.88's better. Also they aren't too far apart when it comes down to choosing. So maybe the deeper will be better

I run 35s and 4.56 gears. rpm at 60 is about 2300. I get about 15 mpg highway. You cant go deeper than 4.88 with your current axles, just fyi.
Offroad on onroad feels like stock.
I suppose it depends on if you have a 5 speed or not also. a 5 speed and 4.88s your rpms will be like 3300 at 60-65

Easy and accurate way to compare gear ratios:

A new speedo gear is always a smart upgrade too.

4.88 is the best ratio on paper, but the pinion gear is really small and therefore more prone to breaking than a 4.56 pinion.
