Default Tire difference

What tires are closest to a 31/10.5r15. Would it be a p265/70r15 or an lt265/75r15. Or are they all the same

typically 31's are cheaper than their metric size as well.

I had a new experience this week shopping for tires. Normally the shops pushed me to 235 75 15 size but when I was asking for those this week two shops actually suggested 30x9.5x15. Most people recently were saying that size was being phased out, but seems more tires are now offered in that size than were before. Of course, Wal Mart will always push you to Pmetric, since they only seem to know about passenger car tires. Mention 31 or 30 and you get a blank stare )

nah man 30s are being phased out. I work at a tire and auto shop. There are still options in 30s, but not as much aso 235s. Wanna know the reason they were pushing you to 30s? Because they cost more. BUT 235s and 30s measure out to nearly the same size. I always push my customers away from 30s and to 235s because there are more options, cost less, and they are basically the same size tire. If you really want " a bigger tire" you need to go to 31s.

That's what I was thinking but the Mastercraft AXTs I was looking at were cheaper in 30 than 235 which surprised me. Also after researching it a little the difference is also a little more tread depth than a P tire would be and heavier sidewall. The LTs were also heavier than the P but slightly less than the 30s.

The difference is very very small between 235 vs. 30.
When I first built a class 11 style vw beetle years ago, I ran
7.00-15 or N78-15.

They weren't common then but you could find them.
When it came time to replace, I bought some 235/75 Mastercraft courser a/t tires which had some nice Knobby lugs vs most A/T tires.
After a rear suspension upgrade, I added 2" of lift to each end as was excited about finally being about to fit a 30x9.50 so I ordered some in the same tire.
Bout 1/2" width is all I gained, was dissapointed in the retailer for telling me some junk about them being larger because a very slight difference isn't worth the price difference.
Idk why there is two different sizes offered, everyone needs to pick one or the other.

It's an anomaly that you found some cheaper man haha. The tread and sidewall differences are miniscule as well. Wouldn't even notice side by side.

alot of older gentleman get real huffy when I tell them to not get 30s haha. "I want a larger tire from this stock size and blah blah". Just trying to save people money haha. Then they calm down a bit and I show them 31s if they want a bigger tires butv then don't like the price of those either haha.

I will probably go 31. Cooper AT3 that I priced went up about $50 per tire from 30 to 31 but the Mastercraft AXT went up maybe $10 per tire. Essentially the same tire since Cooper makes them both. The place is a small town Cooper dealer so I don't know where he gets them, but his prices beat what I found here in town by almost $100 per set, so worth the 25mile drive

The mastercraft don't really compare to the at3. The at3 is an outstanding all terrain. Up there with the ko2. Cooper owns many tire companies including mickey Thompson. Those mastercrafts are decent but tier or 2 lower then the at3 imo. I would go with the at3. You won't be disappointed.

Most flotation sizes(30,31,32,33,etc...) are always cheaper than their metric counter part. But to answer the original question is a hard one since it all depends on the tire manufacture as far as diameter goes. But general rule of thumb is

31x10.50x15 can be anywhere from 30.6"-31.4" in diameter to be called a 31.
A 265/70/16 is roughly 31" in diameter.
A 265/75/16 is considered a 32" tall tire but like the ones on my 4Runner they are 31.6" tall.

I wouldn't rule Mastercraft out completely or as crap. I had the Courser AT/2. Way better than the 1st gen BFG AT's and one of the best AT's I've ever owned. I went just about everywhere with those. Too bad they discontinued that design except what you find in overstock.

Check out hercules tires. I've been very happy with the three sets I've gotten from them over the years. and they are very cost effective vs other brands. They are also a cooper brand.
