thinkin time for motor swap....
just did head gasket on my 88 Cherokee. its the 4.0L with automatic trans. took it for drive and overheated it. now its just not sounding the same. good thing i just picked up dana axles to cause broke front.
anyways, just trying to get input on motor ideas.....
not sure if i want to go rebuild or put different motor for power??
bought it cause price was right and wanted DD/wheeler....
i know mechanic work and don't mind doing mods, but want it up and running
ASAP

I'd rebuild your renix bottom end... get you a 95 head ported and polished, 99 intake, and get you an apn header to match that 95 head. maybe a high flow cat. These motors made quite a bit of power actually. beat out alot of V8's from the same time period. You could always stroke it if you want more torque.

then just drop another 4.0 in it and go. Trying to convert it to accept anything else is just adding alot more work, and possibly losing power.
You could swap in a Chevy 5.3. Pretty strait forward swap from what I understand. There are companies that make adapters for all the wiring and everything involved.
They weigh about the same as the 4.0 but have two more cylinders and a ton more horsepower.

maybe you should find out what went wrong with your head gasket job before you try to tackle a stroker build...jmho
i dont think it was my head gasket job that was the problem, i think its in the crappy cooling system......
besides, stroking it out will ensure it should be good to go for awhile and i have a daily driver now...

Strokers are an awesome option. I've done two of them. 4.6 and 4.8. Lots of power for sure. In the end it came out to about the same cost as building up a sbc, but I didn't have to be. I recommend speaking With Zach at 505 performance, he knows his stuff. I am also more than willing to answer any questions you may have regarding the topic. Lots of people poo poo the stroker saying they are not reliable, etc... Most of them have never had one. If you take your time, are meticulous about the details, you won't have any trouble with it.
