I just use a stock tail pipe to exit the exhaust, but it's cut before the shackle. The muffler is going to get scrapes and bruises no matter what unless you do what ktm said and armor it with plate.
I never saw any advantage to ending it before the rear axle. I did it once and it was to noisy in the cab, and exiting from the side it's just gonna get mangled.

I want to get the pipe out of the way. The more I see the more I'm leaning towards cutting the pipe about 10 inches short of the bumper (and maybe putting on a small turn-down). It will be up and out of the way and still route the exhaust to the back of my rig.

The Muffler is not lower than the factory setup. That pipe coming off it can be raised at least 3 inches easy. The pipe coming off the muffler can be turned straight
a stock exhaust properly hung is barely any below the framerails, that exhaust is considerably sagging lower than stock. Maybe angle of the pics has something to do with it too? but that muffler sure looks lower than any ive ever run. Either way, that is much more vunerable to damage than exhaust run in the stock location straight out the back.

Lol you're exactly right
Anyways OP good luck with your setup. If you dont do any extreme tv show wheelin and just enjoy the occasional trail id recomend the side exhaust but if you do then i would recomend chanelling your whole jeep and making a separate tunnel just for the exhaust that goes no where near your wheel or your windows or hatches or any where that it could be seen or touched by anything other than the hand of a highly trained and experienced mechanic/fabricator. Take it easy man, hope all this was helpful and that you got every detail you needed to complete your dream exhaust setup.

Has anyone ever thought of running the exhaust out of the rear quarter panel, like so?

Just wondering as I have what used to be a rust hole on the passenger side quarter panel after the tire. Would it work or is it crazy talk?

Just gotta keep in mind that if the exhaust elsewhere gets bent up, it might effect how the pipe sits in that hole.
