could be something as simple as a linkage adjustment?
I would check that first.

I removed the linkage and tried doing it by hand and couldn't get it either but I will double check the adjustment

I'd suggest pulling it apart and reinstall everything. Mine went in without any problems. sorry you're having these issues

I believe so if I remember right it was just shy of an inch I took off. It was the rugged ridge kit. I guessing will pull it apart again and see what's wrong

Correct my if I am wrong but I thought you usually only need to cut the shift fork on the 88 & 89 YJs. I've installed the Rugged Ridge kit on many XJs and never had to cut the shift fork.

Rugged Ridge instructions
"STEP 9: With the case disassembled inspect the mode fork shift rod (see image above).
If the shift rod measures 10.2” than you will need to cut it down to a length of 9.380”.
This has been found to be a common problem for 1988- 1989 YJ models. You will need
to cut the shift rod at the end located on the back side of the transfer case (Yoke side).
Make sure that after cutting all burs and ruff edges have been cleaned. "

No. If your rod is sticking out over an inch past the case (with the cone off in 4lo), you have to trim.

I got in a hurry and did mine. Had the same problem. Took it back apart after several other attempts of "finding the problem". Took it apart and realized I put the synchronize sleeve on backwards. Put it back together and it went into 4 low with no problems.

B4 takeing it back apart. Remove this plug or switch whatever you got there and make sure the rails coming into the case freely. When I did mine it was hitting on one side. I took rear cover off and drilled its mounting holes slightly larger which allowed me to shift the cover over allowing free movement of rod.

^^ This for me also. I was going to dremel the part of the housing where the rail slides, but I was able to unbolt it and kinda center it better. Took some messing around but I got it.

Not trying to hi jack, but do you or anyone else know the years of the XJs that need to be cut? I know you need to cut it in some cases but I've never had to cut it and I've installed the RR SYE on many XJs, TJs, and YJs.

I've had the long rails in an '88 XJ and a '89 YJ. So we know '87-'89 for sure. The earlier years also have steel range forks.
