Switching from 15" to 16"+ wheels on 96 xj?

Switching from 15" to 16"+ wheels on 96 xj?
I often hear how 15" tire selection is getting tougher, and finding used is really tough. I looked up the tire size conversions, and was wondering....
So if I was contemplating 31's for my stock 15" rims, what am I losing by moving to say 245/70/16, and is a 17" even possible? Of course I realize my sidewall is shrinking if my rim is getter larger, and the tire height isn't changing. Would love to just buy someone's takeoffs, but it looks like they size out at 32"+, so my 3" lift won't work with 32's.
