Default steering stabilizer

i just bought a 96 XJ and a coworker noticed that my steering stabilizer leaks, so i have 2 questions,

1. do they make popping noises when the steering wheel is turned from full lock to lock?

2. can i use a steering stabilzer from the auto part store for my XJ that's lifted 3.5" or do i have to buy one from an off road auto part store or lift shop?

The popping can be anything under the front end,Get under the jeep and lube everything with a grease fitting and look for things wrong while your under it.On the steering stabilizer you really don't need it but if you want to replace it any oem one should work since you still have the stock steering on it.
