steering popping and locking

Default steering popping and locking

Got a 1990 cherokee its got a lock right locker, 4 inch lift, rusty's adjustable trackbar,drop pitman arm, swaybar disconnects, new u joints, new hubs and no vacuume disconnect. I'll turn the steering wheel while I'm setting still and I'll hear a pop and see the tire jerk alittle. i can feel a spot in the steering just before the pop,,dosn't do it all the time but at least 3 out of 5 turns . while I'm driving the steering will lock and go left ....I'll gently turn the wheel to the right hear a pop and the steering go back to normal..i think its the steering box but not sure .I'vr been uder it while a friends turned the wheel and can't pinpoint the problem..plz help..Has anyone else had this problem?

I would say your lower track bar mount bolt hole has become opened up and what you are hearing is the track bar sliding from one side to the other of the lower mount. When the bolt switches sides it does so violently and the sound is the bolt impacting the bolt hole inner edge.

An 1/16 of an inch is enough but if yours is like mine you will have a lateral play of 7/16" or so. Have a look and let me know.

it did start after I put the new trackbar and drop pitman arm...had an awful death wobble now its gone .....do you really think the trackbar mount would make my steering lock up

update, the locking and popping is coming from my locker ...I had my vacuume disconnect permently locked in some how its making my locker pop really hard in a turn setting still ....put the discnonnect back to the way it was and no more problem

Thats the lockrite ....... for ya !

My tj did that all the time it never had that problem after I installed a ARB
I have a few friends who had that issue with their lockrites also they switched to spartan and the problem went away

think it might have a problem with the proper backlash on ring and pinion....problem solved for now but when i lock in my 4 wheel drive the popping going to come back ...gonna take it to a shop i guess and check the pinion....
