Default Speedometer help after SYE

So I purchased a 1998 cherokee about a month ago knowing that the speedometer wasnt working when I bought it. The PO had installed a rugged ridge brand SYE and installed it onto the np231. After some research I ended up buying a different speedo gear(31 tooth since I'm running 32in tires) and installing that. I have tried installing the speedo housing into the T-case in all 3 positions and the 28-31 range multiple times with no luck. But when the housing is pulled and the gear is spun the speedo on the dash works confirming that it just isnt contacting anything inside the case. I've talked to several different local mechanics and none of them seem to have any ideas on how to go about fixing it either.

If you take a flash light and shine it into the speedo hole do you see the blue gear collar on the shaft like it is supposed to be?

Also, some SYEs require trimming off the end of the speedo gear "nose" because it is too long and bottoms out on the other side causing your speedo assembly not to seat all the way in the housing and the gears dont mesh.

They make long and short speedo gears .Might be possible owne installed a short one in place of a long one . Causing it to not contact shaft gear.

The link posted above is one that I came across while doing my research. So since my cherokee is a 98 it has the electronics VSS not the cable driven speedo. I will check here in a bit to see about the blue gear collar inside the t-case.

You are missing the blue gear that is supposed to be on the tail shaft portion.

The gear slides over the end and fits into that position with a lock ring iirc.

Thats what I was afraid of. :/ Either they lost it, broke it, or didnt think it was important.

Is there any place that I can purchase the blue gear separately to avoid buying a whole new SYE?

I just spent a little while searching, I couldnt find it anywhere. You might try calling rugged ridge.

Called Rugged Ridge for ya. Cross reference part numbers are below.

4338996
s16276

You can buy it here.
http://www.gbaparts.net/catalog/prod...-part-4338996/

They also said that if you gave them a call and explain that you bought it used and this piece was missing, they would ship one out to you for free. I spoke with Josh in tech.

Hope this helps,
Kris Froehlich

Would also need the clips that go on either side of the blue gear.
