Speedometer failure after NP231J rebuild
Good morning,
I recently rebuilt the NP231J in my Cherokee, the transfer case already had a SYE prior to the rebuild. After reinstalling the transfer case I noticed the speedometer was not working. I talked to a friend who informed me I need to adjust the sensor in the output extension housing. Looking at the bracket and the sensor it seems like it can only go in four different ways. I tried all four with the best results being the speedometer worked half the time and randomly shot up to 50+ MPH the other half of the time.
I started doing some research looking at various install guides for different SYE kits. It seems like all of them mention speedo gear snap rings. I did not have any snap rings for the speedo gear, it does make sense to me that without being held in place that gear could be moving up and down the shaft in the extension housing causing the crazy speed readings.
To sum it up, are there snap rings that hold the speedo gear in place on the shaft of a NP231J with a SYE?
Thank you.

That is exactly what it was. I thought it didnt seem right when I was putting it back together. It works great now with the snap rings holding the gear in place.
