Spartans fartan!!!!
Here's what I think blue. The locker is made so the center pin does'nt fit tightly. It kinda rocks back and forth to let it ratchet on turns. Since yours is working one way and not the other, I think (and I'm pretty sure I'm right) that one of two things is wrong. 1. The locker is defective, which means the side that won't rachet has too close of a tolerance around the center pin so it stays locked or 2. there is something like a very thin shim stuck to the carrier keeping the locker from rocking around the pin. But...if the tolerances are between .145 and .170 then your going to have a defective locker and all the breaking in you can do is just going to bust an axle. All it would take is something the size of a grain of sand to get between the locker and center pin. Sorry for your trouble man.

What about the center pin its self? Did it come with a new one? I know my powertrax noslip used a new smaller pin.... My buddy with an aussie had unlocking problems and needed a new center pin as well.

So far everyone else I know has been happy with their Spartans. Hopefully bluexj just got the 1 in a million that's bad. Spartan just came out with a locker for the Chrysler 8.25 and I've enjoyed mine in my dana 30 so much I'm about to order one for the 8.25.
Bluexj, please let us know how it goes....

The 231 case is the part time 4wd so be careful what you do on pavement. The 242 is the case that has the full time 4wd and can be run on pavement. If you're testing on pavement then you're loading up the front and rear axles when you turn and that may have something to do with your issue by not being able to unload the front axle. Just something to keep in mind.
Let us know how the replacement unit goes.

I just installed spartans in front and rear about a month ago.
From what I read I think you are experiencing the FRONT locker "lock-up" cause your giving it enough gas to make it engage and when you let off or the load levels out the locker disengages and it makes a LOUD clunk. I have experienced this a few times when I turn 4wd off and it takes some driving to disengage completely, usually when I'm on pavement but it happens in the dirt in really tight turns sometimes.
FYI...I didn't use ANY shims when installing the lockers, the instructions didn't say too. D30 front D35c rear.

How does that Spartan act on the highway in the rear? Do your tires chirp around the corners?

Just clicks "ratchets" when coasting in parking lots at low speeds, 10mph-less and turned pretty sharp like pulling into a parking spot or flipping around.
