So I have a 29 spline Chrysler 8.25 geared to 4.56, I recently installed a spartan locker and have had no luck with it... It won't catch in the woods when I'm in 4x4. It ratchets like crazy when I take right hand turns but it barely makes a sound taking left hand turns. Occasionally when I'm driving straight down the road the locker will catch momentary n jolt my jeep forward. Has anyone had similar issues/experience with a spartan locker? Thanks.

my 8.25 is welded and has no noise at all.
It should catch. Make certain your clearance between the locker haves is correct.
Yes, the locker was 100% installed right pulled and reinstalled just to be sure n still has same issue.

I have a front spartan locker and it had clearance specs. Maybe the rear does not? I don't know.Originally Posted by mcguyver_xj

Then you have a broken component.Originally Posted by clayton3854

Because working properly they always lock up.

i had the same locker in my xj 8.25 and it worked pretty good a bit noisy and stuff but this one is just incorrectly working and there's no abnormal wear on it either

Shoot its been a while but I believe you shim the outsides or remove the shims..
All the pressure and engagement work off the pin pushing the two halves towards the ratcheting teeth.
So if you have too large of a gap in the middle, you would shim the very outside . IF you have too little clearance your locker may make more noise. Because you need roughly a quarter of an inch for both tooth sets to clear each other.
I imagine on the latter it would be from leaving the shims in place may cause too little clearance.
Also if you have too little clearance it may be from the axles themselves being shimmed incorrectly. Just a thought?

There are no shims on a Spartan. You remove the thrust washers and be sure the pins and springs are seated correctly and it should work. The axles have no effect on how it works, and there are no shims on the axles, either.Originally Posted by holycaveman

ok heres the full story this 8.25 used to be welded but when the welds broke they cleaned it out and put spider gears in...then installed the locker which does not unlock/lock properly, i noticed one piece was backwards so i took it out and re-installed it and it still will not work properly....with the locker out there was a bit of forward resistance in the gearset with the locker in its unreal...

No, but if you ran into a problem where your clearance was wrong. Shimming or the removal can help.Originally Posted by Jamison

Also if an axle was messed up somehow this may effect the locker.
When the gears were put in by the PO they shaved down the center pin, would this have any impact? Isn't it the gear teeth your supposed to lightly shave, rather then the center pin?
My buddy think it's the carrier that's out if spec? He says based on the fact this axle used to be welded in the rear he thinks the carrier either warped or stretched during the welding. Think this is my issue?
