from what ive read online its better to have a mechanical locker in the rear rather then the front for ice and snow driving. that way the front doesnt lock up in a turn. but im sure once you get used to driving with it that wouldnt happen.

My aunt is from Buffalo. So I have a little experience.

Well kept it in 4wd today. Drove around town with it in 4wd. No noise but definitely harder to steer. No clicks or bangs like I have heard from others. Very smooth just harder to steer and not near as comfortable. Gassing it in the turns and you really have to grip the wheel.

3rd day report.

Have an old stump out back figured i would put a front wheel up on top. Almost to the top and BAM! LOUD NOISE. Crap!, now what? Couldn't roll but a little forward or backward. Put it in 2wd and moved to the garage. Took the differential cover off.

Freaking cross pin broke in 3 places and split the carrier.

I mean you got to be kidding me! I don't even spin the tires on this jeep!

I got another carrier, that's not what pisses me off! Its that my wheeling trip for this weekend is ruined. Got to fool with trying to get a replacement locker which I don't even want now.

Shoot I only have 32" tires!

No one told me you wasn't supposed to use 4wd ever!

That really sucks! Though it does say right on the Spartan website that 32's are pretty much the max you should use.

Been thinking about one of the "lunch box" lockers for the rear of mine so I've been keeping an eye on this thread. Definitely not good what happened BUT it was the cross shaft and not the unit itself.

I haven't had any problems with mine. Maybe you weakened the carrier with your braking thing? You did blow out your spiders. Could have put a hairline crack in the carrier as well. Did the cross pin break or no?

Pin broke in 3 pieces.

Screw it. I am going to install the damaged locker in a new carrier. It messed up a couple pieces but I think I can repair it. Should have it done in a few hrs.

It very well could have been the carrier. After the first set of spiders I broke the second set went right away. Now the Spartan. The pin did drop in a little loose come to think of it.

Not blaming the locker yet considering I broke two sets of spiders.

We will see.

Alright finally got the Spartan cleaned up and put in the new carrier. Two of the pin holes were damaged. So it took a while to get it in working order again. But thanks to my dremel we are back in business!

Ring gear and Spartan were a nightmare to get out of the old carrier since it was destroyed. But with some grinding I made it happen. Shoot I got to get this fixed tonight.

Its my only way home from work! LOL

Alright. Differential is back in, cover on. Axles operate like they should. The only hang up is there is a chipped tooth on the pinion. You can feel it every rotation.

Oh well at least I am going home finally! Well that is after a test drive.
