So... front or rear locker?

the truck is DD, sees a lot of highway time

does not have lockouts on the front

has a HP 30 front and Chrysler 8.25(27) in the rear

running tires that measure 33.2" tall and 11.25 wide

Start with a PowerTrax NoSlip in the rear axle, upgrade the front when funds allow with a selectable.

I DD with a locker in the rear, its a loc-rite, and its not too bad. I do not recommend a loc-rite unless your on a budget

IMHO the powertrax no-slip is a good choice. But first thing you should do is figure out whether you have a 27 spline or a 29 spline rear axle. 1996 was the split year so you could have either one.

i would go with aussie locker up front and save ur money and do the ford 8.8 swap in the rear so it has limited slip and is stil streetable. thats what i did and im very pleased and dont chew up tires and it also is my DD and dosent hurt the gas milage to bad either. after i installed my front locker i lost about 1-2 miles per gallon

Front. You can get a nice cheap auto locker for the front and you won't know it's there, lots of guys think a front is better than rear if you only have 1. I've got a Spartan in my d30 and don't know it's there unless in part time 4

A rear lunchbox locker can be installed without removing the carrier.

Just adding... I have a powertrax no-slip in the back of my DD. I have noticed no fuel economy decrease since install, and the only time I have tire chirping is if I gun it in a turn.

If your ring gear is too thick to get it out then it is also too thick to have gotten it in, and since both the d35 (90 and newer) and 8.25 are c clip, you have to have the ring gear in before the cross shaft.

In other words, if the carrier is in the vehicle and was working, the shaft can come out

In the instructions it tells you a work around for non C clip dana 35's. Maybe that is what he was talking about...

so it does not cause issues even without lock outs?
