Anyone have any suggestions on how to build your own snorkel? Or is it better and easier to buy one. I have found a snorkel on eBay for around $70 should I go for it or build my own?

That one looks like it needs some other parts but I would rather use that then make one out of pvc pipe or something.

$70 you can't really beat it. There's some chinese vendor on here the has the for $120ish I think. I have a snorkel and besides the amusement factor of having one if I could do it again I would go with the cowl intake.I have tested my snorkel thoroughly and without raising the exhaust all the way up to the roof the mod is really only 50% done.

No 1. are you doing it for looks? Be honest.

I did a cowl snorkel for a couple reasons. one is that I don't care to sport a plastic snorkel on the side of my jeep that I may at any time rip completely off. Because in my op they are not for hard wheeling.

Number two is I really don't plan on going in water that is over my chest and steering wheel. Because that is about how far I can go with just my cowl snorkel.

I have never seen a home made snorkel that looked good. I have been contemplating buying on myself but still unsure how they work, I am afraid of the neighborhood misfits stuffing things down the neck and clogging it on me and then have no air flow into my engine.

Yes I am doing it for looks and when I go out mudding with friends (after i get my lift and tires on) I don't want to flood my engine. So pretty much looks and performance

You took me the wrong way. My point was a cowl snorkel will get you in water up to about your neck sitting in a xj. So do you really plan on going higher than your neck while wheeling? Because if you are then by all means get one that hangs off the side and goes up over the top of the roof. And make sure you get pictures!

There is also nothing wrong with doing it for looks. I make my living off of "looks". Didn't want you to take me the wrong way.

Most malls are not to difficult if you have a little posing experience. LOL

I just meant I have scratched or dinged about every spot on my xj. Just don't see a snorkel holding up?
