I thought about the whole crushing scenario after I posted this up. I'm still curious to hear opinions from people who have done it before and their experiences with any clearance issues, if any.
If I did it I'd want it to be as tucked away as possible. I was also thinking of possibly doing a turn down dump off right after the muffler aimed at an angle towards the rear tire. Ideas, ideas..

I did a turndown right after my glasspack and I ain't ne'er turning back! I think you would be okay with the side pipe but you'd hafta tuck it in by the frot of the rear fender well. I was
Gonna do that but I decided I didn't want any excess heat by the tires because it'll just help wear out my 280$ tire!

To go out the side it will have to be below the framerail. Itll get crushed in short order. I suppose if you run a ton of lift and tiny tires you could snake it through the wheel/axle arches.
Dumps are ok if the exhaust is tucked up high enough, you have to use the hanger by the rear axle though to keep it from bouncing around.
Im a fan of the full exhaust tucked as high away as possible

I see what you mean. It needs to be held on somehow unless I installed a hanger elsewhere. I'm actually leaning more towards dumps right now but don't want to have a fumes issue. I had a '90 notchback mustang a couple of years back with dumps and the previous owner never through turn downs on them. Fume city. Once I installed turn downs I never had another issue and the dumps were in the center underneath of the car. Makes me think it may be possible to tuck it and dump it without an issue, but then again I don't have as much exhaust pressure as the notch.
Thanks for the links Power.

I ripped my muffler from the cat back when i first got my xj, i had a 90* turnout with a 4" tip on it goin out the side just infront of my tire, worst sounding thing ever , droned inside the cab lik crazy and was in the way when wheeling , crushed it acouple times , finally i got tired of it and got a new thrush muffler not glasspack, and a turn down and ended it just before my axle i will never do it differently from now on

I have a friend with side exhuast on his XJ. He cut a 3" hole in the chassis rail welded in a 3'' piece of pipe to fill/strengthen it, the ran his 2-1/2'' exhuast pipe through it just in front of the rear tire. It looks pretty slick, and its up out of the way to not get hung up or crushed. I Plan on doing the same thing when I get rid of my sliders for replacement rockers/boatsides
Ill try to find a pic if I can

You have a valid point, and im sure it would rattle if it got hit. He only runs in mud racing so not much chance to hit it lol
