So I found a guy on craigslist selling a ford 8.8 off of a late model explorer with 4.10s and limited slip for $125. But here is the catch. He said that the 8.8 is under his truck right now. I said, "what do you mean?" he goes on to tell me that he got the axle off of a late 90s explorer and put it under a older Mazda truck that he turned into a hot rod. He put a v8 and a 5 speed in it. But that's not it....
I asked him to send me pictures of the stamped tag on the axle to verify that it has 4.10s and a limited slip..... He also then goes on to tell me, " well the tags won't match". Then he explains that he put the 4.10s in and the limited slip him selfs. I'm thinking, well ok this might not be bad that means it has a fresh Limited slip and gears. But that is not the case... Apparently he said that he installed him his self but he went to the junk yard and got them out of another 8.8 from around the same year mountaineer and put them in the 8.8 that he bought...
Oh, I also asked him why he was getting rid of it and he said he took the motor out of the truck and is parting it out.
So this is where I'm at currently. Should I trust his. Gear and limited slip install? And should I trust that the limited slip is good and doesn't have burnt clutches in it?
My next option is to get a 8.8 from as explorer from the local junk yard here.
They have the flowing axles:
8.8 with 4.10s non limited slip
8.8 with 3.73s with limited slip
And they won't 250 for either one before tax.
I am planning on putting the axle under my 1988 Comanche 4.0, 4x4, auto, short wheel base. I drive it alot on the high way to get back and forth to the beach and plan on doing light to mid level wheeling.
Tell me yalls thoughts, attached are pictures the guy sent me of the axle.

First off, verify that it has disc brakes and is the 31 spline version.
And odds are, he may have just swapped in the 410 gears and lsd re using shims and bearings.(not good ) although not a big deal if you plan to regear.
And to verify that it is actually 410, pull the cover and spin the diff some till you see 2 numbers etched next to eachother, divide those 2 numbers to get gear ratio. And with the cover off you can check if you see the clutches and Z spring that the LSD carriers have. But again, if it was pulled from a Junkyard odds are the clutches and shims will need to ne replaced for the LS to work worth a damn
