Default Shock options an opinons

Alright so I flexed the rough country long arm out for the first time today an I'm not overly impressed. I don't think it's the whole lift that's crap but probably the shocks. It's also been suggested that the leafs maybe holding it back. What are the options for an 8" shock? I know skyjacker has nitros that run on their 8" kits. Anyways pictures speak louder than words so here u go. The rear tire is about an inch off the ground. Didn't even get a 35 into the fender before the tire lifted.

did you install bump stops? if so are the touching? I have read that the RC-X long arm is restricted with the shocks they give you. are they bottoming out? or topping out? any pics of the springs or shackle angle while flexed/ride height?

I can easily push my 33's into the fender with mine. 5.5-6" of lift

Still had about an 1.5" of uptravel on the passenger front shock before it hit the stop on the shock. Bumpstops are factory. That was half the reason I was flexing it to measure for bumpstops. I figured I'd be ripping a front fender off before I got a tire off the ground. Didn't take any pictures of the rear shackle angles I'll try next time I have a chance to flex it. It seemed like the shocks where just drooped all the way out to me. That's why I'm wondering what are my options on a 8" shock with bpes an the stud adapter. I think that should definetally keep the shocks from limiting travel. I'm going back to 33s in a couple weeks so I want to set the bumpstops up off of that. I know there is a lot more flex in this lift I just need to figure out what's holding it up

shackle angle has a lot to do with the rear leaf spring flex. however they are new right? which could take a while for them to settle and soften up. if you think a shock is to short or to long and limiting your flex you can remove them and flex it. see where it stops and measure the mounting points to get the correct length.

Yea it's the first time it's been flexed. Lifts been on alil over a month. I think that's what I'm gonna have to do is take the shocks off an measure. If I can get it lined up myself tomorrow I'll flex it again an take some shackle pics. I need to get it freed up or broke in by June cuz my club is hosting a June jam for all the clubs within a couple hundred miles an it'll be this xj's debut an I don't wanna be disappointed lol

Ok so I called rough country tonight to make sure they sent me the right shocks. They already sent me the wrong pitman arm so the possibility was there. I give the guy the numbers off the shocks an he tells me yea they sent u the shocks for a 4.5 then he puts me on hold. I was like great they will send me the right shocks an I should be in business for awhile till I can get the leafs broke in an measure for permanent shocks. He comes back on the phone an say well actually those are the right shocks. We use the same set for the 4.5 as the 6.5. Yea I was like WTF! He told me they were sending me a set of bar pin eliminators an that should make it better. Now don't get me wrong I'm very grateful for that an worse case scenario they just saved me from buying them when I go to 5150s. Yet I had to ask the guy why they didn't have a specific set of shocks for this lift. He told me the r&d dept concluded their would be to much travel to on the 6" shock. Now I don't know bout most but I bought my long arm to have problems like too much travel! That's what bumpstops were made for. I can stop uptravel an let it droop to the other side of the world. Needless to say this has left me scratching my head. I'm gonna put the bpes on an see what it does an if that don't work he said to call him back an he would send me their 6" nitro shock. I appreciate them trying to make it right but it's kinda the principle of the fact. You know the shock set up on your most expensive lift sucks *** an instead of do it right the first time you wait for someone to call an complain then offer up a prepackaged solution. I mean for god sakes I was measuring for bumpstops but didn't even get one 35 to touch a fender on 6.5" of lift. An the fenders are cut very mildly. Sorry I think my rant is about over. Here's to hoping bpes an spring break in works miracles!

thanks man I appreciate it. Im gonna check into the rustys shocks. they are pretty well priced and worth giving them a try. cant be much worse then i have. rustys is actually cheaper on the bumpstops and isolator pads i want too! looks like im gonna be placing an order with them soon. Might be getting a deal on some 36s so gonna be doing a good bit of bumpstopping.

Call Grimus up with Rough Country, take some measurements of your desired compressed length and then get the longest shock you can with that compressed length.

rusty's did not have shocks long enough for my needs (and I am on short arms) but RC did.

RC hydro shocks were almost 3" longer than rusty's longest hydro shock

rough country part number: 8159

they are meant for a 5" lifted Dodge 1500/2500 and are about 31" extended

Ride nice to!

Ok cool , I ordered my shocks and bump stops at the same time , and I wasn't totally sure I was making the right decision on shocks either but it's all trial and error and they work out great for me , just order there extended bumps for the front and go to a local sporting good store hockey bucks are a buck a piece , for 36's I'd probably recommend a stack of 4 on each side with the rustys extended stops

Called rough country twice tonight. Best they could tell me was to put the bps they were sending me on an then met them know. They would try to figure out a nitro shock to work. It's their lift. They should know what will work an package the damn thing from the beginning.

Rough country is a good company to deal with of you deal with the right people there , I talked to some morons on the phone there and also talked to knowledgeable people , but they deff should know the right shocks and parts when there selling a complete kit , I pieced my lift together from diff companies on exactly how I wanted my truck so I never had a complete kit from them

lame... seams kinda dumb they are making it trial and error with a packaged "kit"... I have the RCX long arm kit. i love it. flexes very well. how ever i just bought the long arm upgrade so don't know much about there full kit. but i can tell you the 4.5" shocks i had on mine before i went to 6" DID NOT fit at all.... way to short....

Im not mad at rc. They have been very helpful an I like their product. I've just waited a while getting all the loose ends tied up to flex it the first time. Then when I finally did I was rather disappointed an came up with a whole new set of loose ends to add to an already heavy list.

I'm gonna take the shocks off an flex it to try an get a measurement an do as suggested. Get the longest shock I can with the right compressed length. Just pisses me off to have to go thru all that two months after buying a complete lift.
