Default Shock options

I have a 4.5 in rough country lift and I want to do a shock upgrade I like the bilstein 5100 but I found these 5160 for the front they look a lot better and will allow more travel. So I was thinking 5160 front and 5100 rear with top shock plate to strengthen shock bolts. Sudjustions???

The "increased shock travel" is because with remote reservoirs you have more room for your shock piston to travel.

Its probably not going to make a difference for you. Unless you have more room for up travel. Which most people do not on an xj.

So unless you are sold on looks or race in the desert, I would skip the expensive ones.

I never buy shocks until I know exactly what my full travel is, and is going to be in the future. Especially expensive ones.

I run the bilstein 5100's.

What size tires are you running or going to run?

Hmm, with 30's or 31's you could actually use the remote reservoir shocks to get mad flex.

The reservoir shocks pack more travel in a shorter package. So what this means is you can make use of your full potential travel better if you use smaller tires and don't have to bump as much.

I run 33's but I have to bump a good bit. So unless I did some major inner fender work I could not fully use the reservoir shocks.

I run 10in travel bilstien 5100's. On full compression I have about an 1/8" of travel left in my shocks. On extension I have about an 1/8" before my control arm mount stops the axle. So I am completely maxed. Because my tire rubs the washer bottle as well as the top of the inner fender.

With the reservoir shocks It would allow a 12" travel in the same size shock extended(for example) But where would I use it? I can't go up, and I can not go down without some major work.

Just an expample or you to help understand the difference.

Lift does not matter. You should choose shocks according to suspension travel and not lift. I will be down to a 2" lift soon and I run 6in extended brake lines and long long travel shocks that would work on a 6" lift.

The point of a resi shock isn't for more travel, sure a 10" resi maybe be 14/24 and a non resi 15/25 but that's not really the point. You also have to take account for mounting... Most resi shocks don't have stem mounts up top. The 5165s do I think

resi's are for cooling mostly. more fluid = better heat dissipation and less foaming/fade.

I have a set of bilsteins that I bought when I lifted mine, but they were a touch too long so I shelved them and bought a slightly shorter pair of foxes. They probably have twenty miles on them as I drove around town to get ot hte muffler shop and alignment shop while I waited for the Foxes to arrive. If you are looking at the same model number shock as I am not using, let me know and I will cut you a deal on them...

I would argue they are for looks.

Because we don't need cooling.

Remote reservoir shocks are for a lot more than cooling or travel.

I have re valved a ton of them. But the truth of the matter is you don't really need them nor would you actually feel much of a difference stock.

can't tell if trolling...

just get some 5100's on all 4 corners and be better off than 90% of people on this forum. and you dont need those fancy heavy duty shock mounts for the rear
putting bilsteins on a rough country lift is a little bass ackwards in the first place...

Ahahahahahahahahahahahaaa

Don't need cooling. That's a good one. Next time I'm ripping down the beach without any shock fade I'll remember that one.

The next shocks I buy for my Xj are going to be some bilsteins or foxes with resivoirs. Because my 5100's don't seem to like going 50-75 on the washboard roads leading to trailheads.
