Anybody have a good answer for how to secure tools to your roof rack? I work in a not great area and pretty sure someone would take my shovel and the couple of other long tools I occasionally have up there, just because they could.

I usually dismount them and leave them at home or in the Jeep, but it's not always possible/convenient to do so.

 

I had a 2001 TJ, sometimes hiding them in plain sight is the best bet. Locks were made to keep honest people honest.

 

I'll get to the brass tax here.

If you value it, don't leave it in, or on, your jeep.

Let me ask you this...what's more inconvenient, taking your tools off/out of the jeep, or filling out a police report, when you need to be at work?

This is coming from someone who has had to do this multiple times, because of tweaker punks looking to get a few bucks in change, a wrench or two, and some other meaningless crap. We live in a decent neighborhood, but not far away from some crappy ones. We always lock our cars, and remove items of value. Yet we've been hit several times in the last year and a half or so...broken locks, broken windows, radios, speakers, and maybe $20-30 in loose change, and registration/paperwork...and, I've personally caught 2 of these guys, had them arrested, and sent to jail.

So take it out if you value it.

 

If its a daily driver carring extra weight can hurt your gas mileage.I'm with roninofako i don't leave anything i carry about in side my truck.Years ago i had a beater 78 f150 someone one busted out my drivers window to steal the radio out of it.The doors was locked i didn't have a key and the radio they stole didn't even work.

 

2 choices either lock everything up or move to the country.

 

Even the county isn't safe around me. You would be suprised how much **** is stollen 30+ miles from town.

 

Only had one try in over 30 yrs and it was met with a full 30 rnds of 5.56 and I gained 2 very good 5 gal gas cans and a set of bolt cutters. They were so stupid they didn't know it was diesel they were trying to steal not the gas tank, had 2 500 gal. tanks at the farm the lock was cut on the diesel tank.


I know for a fact that there a few holes that needed to be repaired in the trunk of the car they were driving also.
