Default seat conversion

Sorry for all of the newbie questions, but have any of you guys installed different seats? I can get a nice set (front and rear) of power/heated leather seats out of an '05 Grand Cherokee for $100. Thinking about using those to replace the ones in the '92 I just bought. Running the power to them should be easy enough. Just wondering about how much fab' work I'll have in mounting them. I'm a welder by trade and an excellent fabricator.......just don't wanna try to and "re-invent the wheel" if there's an easy way that I'm not aware of.

The fronts looks like they would be fairly simple. Getting the rears to work (the folding latches, etc....) looks like it will be a little more complex.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's done or pondered this. Hoping that maybe one of you guys can offer some advice.

You googled "jeep xj seat conversion" ? It's packed with results. Videos, blogs, forums, ads for commercial products, etc.

To answer your question, yes, many people do seat conversions to their XJs. ZJ seats seem to be quite popular.

Thanks for the info'. I just used "seat conversion" in my search, so I'll refine my wording and read up. Thanks again!

I have done the 99 Grand Cherokee conversion. Not easy, but nice when done.

These are the only ones I have. I did have to dent the driver side trans tunnel a little. The WJ seat is wider than the XJ

That's good to know.

Regarding the tunnel modification......I assume that was for the front seats?

You did the toggle clamp on the rear because yours is a 2 door?

Yes to both questions. The 2 door needs some type of seat back movement to get into the back seat. Tunnel modification was with a hammer on the driver side only

I put ZJ seats in my 90 4 door. It was simple enough. All of the seats sit higher. I made custom seat brackets for the front seats to drop them back down around XJ height (I'm 6' 2"). The rear bench just sits high. Not much I can do with that. It's fine for my daughter (she's 3), but my co workers look funny when we take the jeep out to lunch and they sit back there. I've sat back there and it is awkward.

The problem with putting different seat in your XJ is getting the brackets modified to fit the new donor seat while hoping the seat is not too wide and you don't hit you head on the ceiling.94 -98 grand cherokee's are the best best. I would say that the imports are the best bet after that if they are not too wide.

Easiest thing is to make adapter plates to bolt the seats to your stock brackets. Oldblue#2 adapted JKU seats front and rear into his XJ. He has a build thread with detailed pictures.

I put Tiburon seats in mine. Easy-peasy if you have a welder.
