A 98 Durango steering Box [ non plow] must mean snow plow.

Part # on invoice is VIS502-0124 $270.00

Default Up-grade steering

Ok, I am starting to get everything together for up grading the steering since I have changed to the curry steering system and am planning on going back to 33" tires. I already bought a re-built Durango box off eBay and I wanted to go with a higher volume pump so I purchased an ARG pump. In their instruction on line they recommend a cooler, so I am considering Derale cooler kit from Summit but want to hit the yard first to see if there is some thing a little larger. (I don't think it matters much but the added amount of fluid stored in the cooler and lines would not hurt since the stock reservoir is small.) they say to not take a chance and replace the pressure line. So that will be a no-brainer. They also recommend either Red Line or Royal Purple synthetic power steering fluid.
Here is a link to the pump and the cooler I am installing; http://www.jeep4x4center.com/agr-per...gr-813256.html

It might be a week or so before I can get to this but I will try to let you know how things go.

I pulled a steering box from a S-10 pickup with a 4cyl and 4x4. The housing is actually smaller than the XJ box. I guess the boxes didn't change one engine to the next. I've heard the earlier ones were built stronger than the later model ones. However I've heard just the opposite as well (on this thread).

I want to say like 2.75" S-10 and ~2.8125" XJ. I can get actual figures when I'm home to verify everything.

We just installed the s10 box on my XJ a week ago (direct swap) but we're wrapping up a few odds & ends before it's drive-able. I'll report back in a few weeks.

The Durango box is NOT a direct fit but still easy. The housing is larger so you need longer spacers for the box to clear the frame. The factory spacers are junk. Also, I provided incorrect info about the stock pitman arm earlier. My donor vehicle had an aftermarket part installed when I got it.

Wrong you are. I've given bad advice on here a time or two but I know for a fact Durango boxes are a direct swap and you can use all your xj hardware. The factory spacers are junk but the Durango box fits with no modifications to anything. You just need to use your xj pitman arm.

I feel like every S-10 steering box thread turns into a Durago thread.. There are enough of those out there with plenty of information.

Any Saginaw steering box will fit. My post was just pertaining to the post above me.

You're absolutely right.

I've been driving mine on the S10 box for a few days now & it's great. Silky smooth & still has a good turning radius. It's a direct swap with the stock XJ steering box.

What did your housing measure to (where the cap is)? Also what year did you pull yours from?

I have no idea of the measurement. I'm not near the Jeep right now.

Any model V6 S10 from 1995-2002 will work. Pre '95 is the same box as the XJ so you don't want that.
