Default roof basket

Hey guys, I'm in the process of building a roof basket for the ole' XJ. for those of you with them do they catch and hold a lot of snow? living in the great white north of Minnesota I am wondering if I should keep it off in the winter.

I have a Yakima Basketcase, very small, skinny bars that don't hold snow or anything. But then again they're also way weaker than a lot of these heavy duty racks people custom build.
