Default Roll cage suggestions

so not sure if anyone has a thread like this but i am sure i has been mentioned before. I am going to do a interrior and exterrior roll cage on my 2 door and was wondering what size pipe i should use?

I was thinking about doing 1 3/4 round tube/pipe for the inside and out or maybe 1 1/2?
also what thickness i should go with

First thing you don't want pipe. Pipe is for poop. You want tube. You can get away with 1.5" but 1.75 would be better and .120 wall is as thin as I would go. You don't want to cheap out on a cage since it's your life you're dealing with.

thanks! so its either 1.5 but i will most likely go with 1.75 but what would be my options for the thickest compared to the thinest i could go with?

.120 is what most use but you could go with .25 for a bit of extra strength but them weight starts to be an issue.

.250 is too overkill, never seen one done that thick that would be stupid as you would be too top heavy then. rock buggies dont even use .250 wall in the chassis. granted they use dom but for what your using it for it wont make a huge difference. the toughest thing is making a solid foundation to mount it to. putting a cage in an xj is like welding a gusset to a beer can lol
i used 1.75 .120 wall for any tube that had bends in it and 1.75 .090 wall for gussets and any strait pieces in mine to save a little weight


check out this thread i started on pirate, i learned a little about tube diameter vs the thickness which one will have a greater effect on strength....

its 0.090 not 0.90. 0.90 would be super thick tube and actually you wouldnt be able to get all of that wall into the tube (if that makes any sense at all), could launch a mortar out of that. . the .120 will be thicker than the .090

I kinda agree with the 1/4 wall being to thick, but I know several ppl who have A and B Pillar bars in 1/4 wall. Granted it is on what I would call heavy rigs, but I dont think that 2 hoops being made out of thicker materail really adds that much weight.

1.75 is the smalest tube I would use on any rig weighing in over 3500 pounds. it is just a matter of strength.

.120 is twice as thick. Get a measuring tape and look at 1/8" verses 1/16". I've never seen anyone use .090 and I've seen .120 bend in a roll. BTW it was way slower than 90mph. It's all about triangulation and gussets.

IT is only 1/8 thick. It will bend and kink if not properly supported. I bent the door bar on my MJ truggy in a light flop.. I have seen friends kink/flatten 1/4 (.250) wall tubing in hard rolls.
