Roll Cage question
Thinking of having exo cage built on my XJ.
The builder can do it out of HREW a lot cheaper than DOM.
What are your thoughts? Has anyone built and rolled something with a cage made from HREW?

If I was going to build one I wouldn't hesitate using the HREW. I have built a half dozen exo cages and dozens of roll cages with HREW tube with no adverse damage when rolled (even at 35 mph).
I have also built roll cages out of chromoly tube, but that's because it had to be to NHRA & NASCAR specs.
Edit: any custom built cage, whether it's an outside or inside cage, can be deadly if built incorrectly...no matter which steel tube was used!

I have rolled an xj with a hrew cage and it held up just fine. Its about how you design the cage. My current exo is also all hrew.

I am new to this site (LOVE IT BY THE WAY!) so I'm not speaking from a roll cage perspective rather from a professional fabricators perspective. I've been in the steel industry for several years and to say that HREW is weaker then DOM is somewhat incorrect. DOM stands for "drawn over mandrel", it’s the process they use to make it. Making tube this way they can produce about any size diameter with almost any wall thickness that virtually seamless. HREW stand for "heat rolled electric weld", just a different process. Take JCKustoms advice, unless you’re building it because it has to meet a curtain specification HREW would work fine, and be much friendlier on your pocket book.

I have both of my rigs caged all DOM, is it worth the extra.. it depends on how you value your life. Seen adam Anderson roll his rig at muddy motorsports park.. his cage was built out of hrew, and split along the seem. Had plenty of triangulation, and it was a double barrel roll with a single end over end, and it split along the B pillar. Ever since seeing that, I wont do any cage work for a client that isnt dom. Adam was unhurt in it, just made me realise how hrew could fail.

any cage iv built has been out of hrew. anyone saying you cant use it has never built and/or used a cage lol
dom is better but it isnt a must its just considered an upgrade.
any cage must be built correctly though no matter what tubing is used
