3 link long arm front is the best I think a XJ can get off the shelf.
Yes plate the unibody rails first. I can not seem to find any pictures at the moment of the rail mounts. BUT on mine (since it was a race car build) Jeremy at RK set me up with full alum arms in place of steel, and a pass upper side arm setup. That way it was less in the way or exh and driveshaft, as well as did a full 14MM orbital joint like the lowers (much stronger).
In this video you can pause it when the camera gets to the LCA area though
Heres a few of mine, I never get tired of posting it :-)

It gets used pretty well:

That thing is sweet. How the hell did you fit the dual exhaust? I see it in the video but I just don't get how it could possibly fit. Also super jealous of how clean and rust free it is. New England eats vehicles. New parts go in my jeep and look 10 years old in one winter. I try to fight it and clean/repaint **** all the time but it's a losing battle

I understand the only issue with the 3-link and driving on the road has to do with brake steer. When braking moderately to hard it affects the tracking and will pull to one side, due to having only one upper arm.
The RK 4-link is the way to go in my opinion. Was just on sale for $760 delivered.

The other thing to think about is adding the fourth link isn't as easy as it seems. You have to deal with the exhaust and clearance issues

Understood clearance could be an issue, especially since I'm set up for 6" up-travel.
I like the idea of the 4link for strength and performance running 30-50mph offroad. But the 3-link seems to work great for the race jeep in this thread and that is what I like to see. Like Clayton and Full Traction that have their own race jeeps, not just crawlers.

my jeep already pulls to one side when braking sometimes. I'm not worried about that. I just want a streetable jeep that I can own the trails on the weekends with. Is the upper link on the drivers side or passenger side?

By generic design yes...
They prefer it on the pass side but requires a tombstone mount welded on and they can't be sure cust can will do that though.
If you want a pass side set up let me know. Also pass side rail is better easier to mount to since you don't have fuel and brake lines ran there...

^Thanks for the info,I was wondering about the upper arm could go on either side.
Here are pictures of the RK tombstone mount and the spherical joint used.
