Replacing a locker

I need to replace a failing locker (unloads often I haven't verified yet but I believe I have some rounded teeth) I did not install it, it was there when I bought it so unknown age. I'm thinking of gambling on a Spartan since that is what is up front and PO installed both axles at the same time I believe. I'd like to have it on hand to just get the job done when I take it all apart. The question is, if it isn't a Spartan is it still a direct replacement? Is there anything special I need to replace/have on hand just in case? It's a D44 XJ axle.

There is also something to be said for the time it takes to pull the whole thing apart to inspect it. So thank you for your opinion (honestly) but can we just assume its bad and answer the original question? (no matter how I write this I feel like I'm coming across as a dick and that isn't my intention..)

if you buy a spartan all you will need is the locker and a new roll pin (iirc a d44 has a roll pin to hold the center pin in)....... If you buy an aussie or lokka, buy new side gear washers jic

I really like the Spartan in my XJ. It's been in the rear for 2 years as a DD for my wife and my wheeler. Hell she even installed it.
I perfer them over the Aussie and lock rites I've had.

A Spartan is like $460 new, so like it's been mentioned before I'd put a new spring and pin kit in it first before replacing it.
I run a lock right in the front and Spartan in the rear and I'd buy either one of them again.

I don't know if it accurate or not, but I found a spartan for $250 shipped new. I don't have a garage, and time is of more cost than price at that point. I'm not a mechanic, it will take me most of a day to remove and inspect/replace. I've only ever had my front locker out once so I'm confident I can do the job, but I'm not quick at all. If you have kids, use your XJ as a DD and have a wife with a crazy *** work schedule you might think like I do

I paid $330 for mine and the 8.25 is always more expensive due to lack of aftermarket support.
Op check with vendors on here.
Rwkhaus usually can't be beat.
I can find them for a d44 for 250-300 all day long.
