Why's that? I'm new to the truck/ 4x4 world. My xj is only 2wd. I've always been a motorcycle atv guy with whatever car I get the cheapest.. That's how I got my xj. It was free

Do you really have to hack that opening into the firewall? Can the filter not be brought in through the cowl cover panel?

I'm not sure what you mean. But yes you have to cut a hole into the cowl area. Were the wiper motor is in.

What I'm asking is whether or not you can get the air filter in by removing the cowl panel on top. Why not a round 3" hole?

I was just looking at the kit and it looks as though I could piece it together through Silicineintake.com but was wondering why the cover panel in the engine bay.

Oh ok gotcha yeah I tried cutting a hole with a hole saw but didn't work even removing the panel up on top the filter would not go in. I cut a neat little square and the panel is basically so you can cover the hole and heat and crud from the engine bay in there. SPECTRE makes one similar where you the filter is in line instead of in the cowl area. But I've dealt with them before and their quality isn't were I like it. I'm sure you can piece this/make your own cheaper I got lucky and found someone on eBay who sold his xj and purchased it for 80-90 shipped.

Right on, thanks for the follow up. Goes to show they didn't make the sheetmetal panel just for looks; lol.

Hah yeah that panel fits nice too! It's a good quality intake. I recommend this type of set up.
