Default Replacement gears for !993 xj

Was wondering what the opinion would be for best gears for muddin, daily driving, and light hill climbing. Also low budget lockers?

XJ has 4 in. lift, and currently running 31 in. tires, but plan on 33 and pocketlocks later this summer. Everything else is stock right now. any thoughts from past experience would be much appreciated, this will be garage floor time with my 17 yr old son.

Does the jeep have an automatic or manual transmission?

What are pocketlocks and do you know how to set up a ring and pinion? It's a very precise kind of thing that most people can't do with tools found in the typical garage. That said 4.56s for an auto and 3.73-4.10 for a manual.

As I know, XJ 4cyl 2.5L using final gear 41:11 right? That means 3.73 and not 4.10. To use 33 inch, I prefer to recommend 4.10s for auto trans and agree with XJMarc that it was not an easy. With 4.10, you still save fuel consumption for everyday use and also sufficient for light rock climbing or muddin. It's just my opinion of course...

It is an automatic, and have done several set ups on gm corporate 10s... but has been quite awhile, have friends who will help as well just as you guys have, do pull quite a few trailers with this rig, on the road, not much offroad trailering goes on, thinking off 4.10s or 4.56 gears, but is a daily driver, when one of our other rigs go down so fuel mileage is necessary...

4:56 will make you happy, especially when towing a trailer

Default Awesome!

Was just coming on here to try and find a solution to the same basic question, only mine is a stick. I may pull a drift boat occasionally, but mostly want low range not to feel normal. and to get a little torque back in high. 4.10s?

4:10's will feel decent with a 5 speed and 33's
