I have an alternator on my 2000 4.0L XJ that is starting to crap out. replacement cost from any of the jobbers around here for the STOCK 117 amp run into $250 and up. Yes for a rebuild and I get wholesale cost too!

The only other thing I've found is the mean green and they are up there too.
I have found rebuild kits for around $40 and I have a spare I can rebuild. but it's still only the 117 amp. What to do?
Any suggestions should NOT run above my original replacement cost of $250 and no we don't have any pick and pulls within 100 miles. Local scrappers want $100 for used.

 

Look up the how to for GC 136A alternator swap. Probably be cheaper then the 117 new.

Anyone dealt with them before? I have about 20 meters of #1 welding cable from another project that I can make new cables from.

 

Been doing a bit more research (as always, don't you?) and found that some of these stock case high output alternators use some internal trickery (rewire from Y to Delta wave) and really don't put out the advertised amperage.
So here is what I plan.
I am going to run a couple of 200 watt lights at front and 100 watt lights in back for any night time off roading I'm foolish enough to get talked into. I also want to run a 5,000 lb winch at the front. Don't know amperage needs at moment.
And finally a second dry cell battery in the back somewhere. I may run an inverter for some 110 volt accessories occasionally.
I am also doing the high idle switch.
My stereo needs are modest. I don't play it very loud as it hurts now. Being old and foolish (more like stupid) in my youth has left me with hearing damage.
I'm not particularly interested in grinding out any brackets but will if I have to.
I'm guessing I'm going to need about 150-160 amps at 1000 rpm.


Sooo having read all that (you did read it all right?) I'm looking for our more experienced members (5-90?)to suggest a company they have dealt with in the past for my alternator upgrade.
I have to replace it now and like I said in it's over $200 for the stock rebuild up here so I have that much in budget for a good one with a warranty.

 

Thanks for this. It does look like the original 117 amp unit so it shouldn't need any grinding.
Have all my own cables. Been building race cars since I was 15 so there is not much I can't do. Just getting to that age where I don't want to do it!

1awg wire and a 160a durango alternator. Other than that, I vote for a mean and green

I just use the Duralast alternators with lifetime warranty. If it goes bad, they replace free. Same with the starters.

 

How much for the Dakota 160 amp one, and will they warranty even if it's not on the vehicle it is supposed to be on?
And lastly I don't have AutoZone or o'riely or advance up here. In Canada it's the internet and get raped over shipping charges and taxes and duty, or China Tire erm I mean Canadian Tire or Parts Source or a jobber like Napa, UAP or Bensen's here in Ontario.
I get wholesale cost at those last places as I once owned my own shop and I still get the discount but even then a STOCK 117 Amp 2000 Cherokee alternator is over $250.
Or I drive an hour away to Port Huron and buy it in Michigan. Which I just might end up doing.

BTW I used to fly to Texas and buy a mustang or cutlass or chevelle and drive them home and sell them for 5 times what I had into it. Just may start doing that with Jeeps! And I got carded when I was 35 there in Bryan. I was checking out A&M as I had received a scholarship to take a doctorate in Inventory Management. Never took it as it was still going to cost me $15 large per year (3 years)and I didn't have the money.

 

NAPA Premium is a good one also. Down here, they offer lifetime warranty with theirs too. Idk how much they are up there though. As for warranty, just don't tell em its for a swap.
