Your axles are constantly moving side to side. It sees more force than you think.
Grinding a tooth is a much safer option

dont forget guys, when you use a lunchbox locker it is the cross pin that is putting the force ont he locker to engage it.
I never grind a cross pin. also I grind the gear after checking pattern to make sure the pinion will never come close.
I will add, its scary how much you have to grind with 4.88's
also you can align the ring gear with the opening of the pin so you can get away with grinding less material.
