You get better fuel mileage and better performance from a regear to 4.10s, and your speedometer will be close to the correct ratio.. Be advised that the 2000-2001 XJs have a low pinion from axle. The high pinion front axles that are in the 99 and older XJs are about 30% stronger. You don't really need to regear, but your Jeep will be a pig and gas mileage will suffer.

I got axle from junkyards out of 4 cylinder XJ's . The come with factory 4.10 gears. I paid 250 for the front and 200 for the rear. I think that's going to be the cheapest way to go and with the money saved with the better gas mileage they get cheaper every time I drive it. Just a thought.

Regearing the axles is going to be about 800 bucks per axle at the very least, boneyard axles out of a 4 cylinder XJ (sometimes a rare find) would be the most cost effective choice.

You can regear Both axles for less than 1000$ I wouldnt recomend putting junkyard axles in a newer jeep because they are probobly pretty worn out and will need a rebuild anyway good luck

If you have a manual transmission you would need to go to lower gears for the 32s, if you have the automatic I wouldn't change gears until you go to 33s.
The POS 3.07s that the manual comes with was hard to do any real wheeling with 29 inch tires let alone 32s.

Mabe in someone else's XJ, 32's tires, auto and 3.55gears is ok but in mine, it sucked.
i could not imagine 32" tires with 3.55 gears on a true driver. i had to deal with 31" tires and 3.55 gears for a month before i did my 4.11 regear,
take it from a guy that drives daily on 31's 4.0 AW4, its worth it to regear to 4.11. especially if you ever plan on towing anything.
i just feel that a 31" tire deserves a regear just as much as a 33 or a 35 does, you could live with 32 and 3.55 if you wanted, but why?
i say buy the newest best condition jeep you can get your hands on. or a 99 if you find a good one.
i have a 01, my brother has a 99

luckyAD80,
First off, go to www.Grimmjeeper.com and use the gear ratio calculator to compare the 3.55 gears to 4.10 gears. Simply select your components from the pulldown menus and do a side x side comparison of the two ratios.
What you'll see is definite difference in the speed vs. RPM's.
Keep in mind that the speed signal from the speed sensor is critical to proper PCM and TCU management of your fuel economy and transmission shift points.
To be sure you have the correct speedometer gear visit http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoSpeedoGears.htm
