rebuilding hp dana 30
I am trying to rebuild my dana 30 out of my 94 jeep Cherokee sport in the process of rebuilding it I am also regearing it and I ran into some issues. I bought everything brand new and I got everything done but when I went to set my pinion gear for some reason it is taking way to many shims to set it at the right depth. please help me figure out what I am either missing or doing wrong. Anybody?

To set the depth or to take out the play when tightened? If you have too much play when the nut is tight then you have not crushed the crush sleeve yet. It can take up to 260 ft lbs to start crushing the sleeve then you set the preload. This play has nothing to do with depth. The best thing is to assemble without the crush sleeve get all the depths and back lash set properly then disassemble one final time and install the crush sleeve. once a crush sleeve is over crushed it's trash and needs to be replaced.
