Rear locker
Sorry if this is a repost I couldn't find anything with searching, I have a 92 manual tranny with the 8.25 axle, I'm looking into locking the rear. How do I do it? And I drive on the road quite a bit, so would I need to get one I can disengage?

first off you need to decide if its a 27 spline 8.25 or a 29 splaine that will affect which locker you go with as thier spline counts differ and lockers are made for each one, second you need to decide if you want a part time like such as an arm set up, ($800) range or a fulltime locker (lunchbox) locker which run anywhere from $200-$400 in the used and new range, brands that make full time are aussie, and sparten to name a few. to deicide this you need to factor in how you drive your rig, where you drive it more? wheeling or on road, and how much you wanna spend amungst other factors.

One factor you might want to consider is...are you doing this upgrade or is someone else? Your sparten and powertrax lockers are easy to replace all you are doing is replacing the spider gears. Although like i found out the powertrax is on back order till sometime in 2013. I picked up a sparten so i will see how that goes. there is a add on here i saw that you can pick one up for about 250 bucks and it comes will all you need including a new pin.

Installing a full case locker instead of a lunchbox locker will allow you upgrade to 29 splines instead of staying with the smaller/weaker 27 spline shafts.

I have a Spartan in the front and its great Offroad and not bad on the road if you drive a lot I wouldn't put an autolocker type in the back just the front. A locker like an arb that you can disengage is going to cost a lot more initially and to install it because you need special tools to set up your ring gear right

Auto as in lunch box/spartan.
like 150%?
I rarely get any pops or bangs. Maybe in a parking lot, but that is it.
Now if you can not run in 2wd it maybe a different story. But otherwise the front is always disengaged in 2wd.
No arguing, its simply the way it is.

im locking my 8.25 27 spline right now with a spartan. im not worried about a 27 over a 29 spline with my 31" tires, not sure what you have but it doesnt sound like you are wheeling your DD that hard anyways. the rear locker goes in super easy, just dont remove the carries like i did.... and ARB air or electric lockers alike are just too much IMO, the spartan will click in parking lots but nothing you can live with, i think it sounds cool, all rigged out and ****. take it easy around corners in the snow and rain cause the ****er will kick out on you real quick.

Just another thought/opinion... I would prefer a selectable locker over a full time - especially in the front. If you are on level ground or going straight up a hill you're good to go with either a selectable or full time, but when you start going across hills you run into traction problems. If you're traveling up and across a hill (at an angle, or even just straight across) any wheel spin will allow your machine to slide downhill. If you leave your locker disengaged your chances of sliding will decrease severely. Sliding downhill isn't going to be a good time if there are trees below you, or even worse... A ledge!
