Default Rear hatch problem

Hi I recently bought a 1996 XJ Cherokee for my son in very good condition. The only problem is the rear hatch lock won't turn with the key. So I can't lock the door. Any sugestions!!!

I have a 95 my parents bought me and the hatch wouldn't lock so I went to a jy and got one I even found a Joey to it and got it to work within a week I locked my keys in my jeep so now I just keep it unlocked. Plus if someone is stupid enough to steal my jeep they can deal with the problems that u take on when u own a jeep. It's a jeep thing right?

I don't lock my XJ and most of the time i leave the keys in the ignition. am i waiting for trouble?... maybe. OR maybe trouble waiting to get a chest full of buck shot. I live in a pretty rural area so there's no need to really secure the rig like a fort. plus it sticks our like a soar thumb. I'm not even sure if the any of the locks work. never tried.

State Troopers i'd like to report a stolen grey and black urban assault vehicle...

The lock cylinder is probably seized if it won't turn. I just pulled all three (doors/hatch) of mine and cleaned them up. It takes patience, a steady hand (small parts) and a dremel tool, but you can clean them up and fix em. If you don't care about having a separate key I would highly recommend just buying a new cylinder off Ebay. Not really worth the time/effort to fix them if you don't care.

Its either seized or it got rear-ended and someone swapped in a junkyard hatch...
