you need a press, dial indicator, pinion depth gauge, bearing splitter, and torque wrench. If you haven't set up a diff before i wouldn't do it alone. If you don't have anyone to help you threw it then i would recommend you pay a reputable shop to do the work. It is not terribly difficult, but if set up wrong it could cost you a lot more money...

i wouldnt say "boggle your mind". if you have any real mechanical skills its a simple task. its just a little time consuming. having the right tools is a must.

you can get away with out having one and cutting the bearings off but i have seen people knick them and ruin the carrier and pinion so i wouldn't recommend it.

Okay, Here's the deal.
First you need to ID the rear axle. That will help us help you.
Second, don't buy anything until you've made an accurate diagnosis.
Third, Open up the rear axle and take a look around. Report what you see and post pics if possible.
I'm gonna guess that you've got a Dana35 rear axle and that the side and spider gears in the carrier are shot.

yeah. the bearing splitter goes between the bearing and carrier(or pinion gear) and you press them off. its splits them apart hopefully without ruining them. when you shim a diff more then likely you will have to press the bearings off again to make adjustments.
He said its for a D30,but good questions. if you don't already know what is wrong don't just throw stuff at it. I assumed you knew what was wrong because you asked about a specific kit....
