With a history like that, if I couldn't get it for a "parts car" price I'd keep looking.

I wouldn't mess with it man. You're a college student with not a lot of time on your hands obviously, and probably not a bunch of money sitting around either. It sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen. There are so many decently priced xj's on craigslist, it really wouldn't be worth it to take on some demon project truck. That's just my opinion, but I've been in the "buy a rusty project car that's been sitting for years cause it's a deal" game before. It's not fun. Unless dude takes an offer of like $1000 I wouldn't mess with it.

Scrap is what, about $250? I'd start there.

If it was worth repairing, it would not have been left sitting for 2 years.

Yeah it's not worth more than scrap. Get a decent stock XJ and stroke it yourself. I said Whoa! because I couldn't believe how f'd it was.

Guessing the convo with the owner went something like this:

Yes consider it a parts XJ for the (known) good parts and the rest scrap, for sure it needs an engine and sitting that long ?? on the trans but should be good and what rear end it has also the D35 worth nothing.

If I were the jeep owner, I'd just scrap it myself if I were only gonna get $300 from a buyer.

And if you're a busy college person without a ton of disposable income, I'd caution you to not mess with the deal at all. As noble as your intention to save the rig from the junkyard may be, it's not your fault the dude let it sit for so long. The guilt of letting a perfectly good truck die in the elements is on him. You can get a pretty sweet xj for like $2500 at almost any time on CL.

When the local shop crashed my XJ into the bay the adjuster calculated that my Jeep was worth $200 but the company offered me $600. We settled for $700.

Blue smoke, oil. Could have blown a ring.
