Ok guys, I am seriously thinking of putting in a HEI distributor from DUI, and running propane. My only fuzzy spot is the placement of 2 10 gallon fork lift tanks. I am wanting to remove my gas tank, and do a rear leaf flip. From measurements I have room to put them underneath, but am unsure of even with a beefy skid plate is it safe enough? Next option is in the back of the XJ, and lastly on top.

I think I would mount them I the back some how . More clearance underneath that way ,and prob wouldn't look very good mounted on top .

I was thinking of making a special compartment for them in the back, and sealing it off, with a vent out the bottom, made out of like 3/16th.

Under is a bad idea b/c offroad you could hit it and cause a leak or explode. Inside is also not good b/c if it leaks the gas is stuck inside and again could explode. The back is ok, but could also be hit there. The roof would not look good but a more worry free place. The best option is the chop the rear and mount it back there.

My truck has no front doors. A rear spring flip makes the axle move back about 6".

OK. I was wondering b/c people call it a spring flip when they take the spring from below the axle to above like on Wranglers. I was wondering if you were confusing something. I have never heard of that flip but that is cool.

So, anyone against building a compartment for it in the back of the jeep, with an outside vent?

No links, but I get propane free, or extremely cheap. Propane has been around a loooong time as a fuel for vehicles, it is a very basic setup, using a vacuum driven carb, and a vaporizer, and a shut off valve either electric, vacuum or both. Just google it.

I was thinking of using some 3/16 and making a welded in box, just large enough to fit the two tanks, no room to roll or anything. Running the line will be easy with a rubber grommet throught the floor, and a hole saw. I was also thinking of venting it on the opposite side of the exhaust, on the bottom of the vehicle. The few companies out there I talked to hung up on me stating they could not condone the propane inside the vehicle whatsoever, so I am turning to my fellow XJ'ers.

AHHHHH OMG NO dont run unsafe equipment on a propane vehicle im a trained alt.fuels technician and your asking for it only run ASME tanks and other ASME certified equipment. might i add that is also highly illegal dont let DOT catch you. i would look up how to instal propane kits before you go and start making a bomb on wheels

here look here : http://www.nashfuel.com

Not illegal to run Propane on Natural gas in a vehicle. Just has to be done properly. IN fact lots of companies with fleet vehicles run Propane cause it is "green".

Facts on Propane
108 octane
Never spills like gasoline.
Will run upside down.

Here is a company that specialises in doing these conversions.
