Question Power Steering upgrade?

Hello,
I have a 97 With a 4.0 engine and after my power steering pump failed I decided to replace it with a 2005 Grand Cherokee power steering pump for the 5.7 V8. So far so good, the mounting holes line up and everything seems like it will fit except for the power steering pressure line. on the OEM pump the hose feeds into the top of the pump, on the Grand Cherokee pump, it feeds in from the bottom. I was just looking for some insight as to if I should replace that pressure house and with what. The Hose that goes with the V8 Grand Cherokee engine is super long, so I don't want all that excess hose in the engine bay, though it does feed into the bottom of the pump. anyone do this already and have something the works? A buddy of mine told me that NAPA could take hoses and splice them together to configure it how I

New Pump side by side with the old
need?
Thanks for the advice

Im interested too I suppose. My pump is pretty worn out and its hard to turn the steering wheel at low speed and low RPMs sometimes. I have to give it a little gas to move the fluid around more so its easier to turn the wheel....

I always like to upgrade when possible if I have to change something.

I wonder if there is another "upgrade" like this that doesnt require these type of mods.... Maybe like this :

WJ power steering pump (fits '96+, plug return hole, and use XJ pulley) from here :

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/bud...herokee-58797/

I dont know what plugging the return hole does, or if that means low side, high side, etc....

Turn 1 Chevy power steering pump and reservoir. Swap in the Xj pressure line adapter and pulley.
The pump body will need to be ground down slightly to install the top left mounting bolt.
I used a nut and bolt on the bracket in that spot instead of grinding the pump body down. Its worked out well so far.

I guess whatever works for you is good...I have owned 2 lifted jeeps on 31's for over half a million miles. With the stock ps pump, I have been able to turn the wheel easily with 1 finger...even at idle. Why would anyone need an upgrade. Sometimes i think the steering is too easy....

There all the same pump. Just set up with different pressures from the factory

It's also kinda randamn on how they are set up. Also found replacement pumps to be lower or higher pressure. depending on if they have no washer or 3 in valve.

Theres also a screen that getts plugged up severly limiting oil flow that ive found to cause the hard steering at low rpm and pump whine.

i run a stock pump that came on my 89 i cleaned screen and set it up for max pressure and drilled passage.

It steers 35s very well even in the rocks twisted up.

I'm a little confused on the setup? I have the same 4.7 v8 WJ pump and reservoir and durango steering box. Drilled the xj pressured adapter just a slight bit over factory, plugged the return hole on res for the hydro fan and adapted the oversized bottom return line to my factory sized hose. This setup has been phenomenal for 39" stickies and locked front.

why is yours a bottom feed for the pressure line?

Don't get me wrong, mine can definitely be easy to turn.... sometimes. But it also definitely can be hard to turn as well. I've done the best I could with burping the system also, trying to get air out of the box or whatever. This has been the case since I bought it about 5 years ago. I have just dealt with it and not cared much. It seems to act up when the fluid is cold, noticeably when I'm trying to back out of a parking spot or something. I started a thread on this back in Feb 2020 also, so it's been a while that I've dealt with it.
As far as why an upgrade? Why not, unless the upgrade isn't fiscally conservative, or takes too much modification. But if a stock pump works great on bigger tires then I'm not opposed to that either.

A steering fluid cooler and inline filter are what I added. I also installed the bigger Dodge gear box.

Important that the cooler be mounted below the reservoir level. do NOT mount the cooler high up infront of the radiator, mount it lower. if it is higher than the reservoir level, you will never get the air bled out.

So this job ended up being a huge pain in the ***. I was only going to replace the high pressure Hose, but because the way the low pressure line was sitting I couldn't Get the new hose in there, so I had to replace both. No big deal besides having to wait on the parts.

I had to really loosen the bracket that the pump sits in between, (the bracket and the air intake). Once I got the top bolt into the pump I rotated it up and I had to finagle the high pressure line and a weird direction to get into the bottom hole for it, because usually it feeds it from the top that wasn't a big deal. But I couldn't get the holes lined up and I finally figured out it was because the hose that now feeds it from the bottom was hitting the bracket. So I had to take the bracket out and use an angle grinder to cut out a section of it so I could swing the power steering pump in and get it in the way it's supposed to be seated.
Then once I had it seated in and bolted in I was trying to put the tensioner pulley back in but now the hose that feeds into the bottom of the pump was in the way. Luckily I was able to tighten that tensioner bolt almost all the way to get it on top of the hose. So I could get the bottom of the long bolt into the bottom hole of the bracket. Then I would loosen it a little at a time, till the bolt would want to come out the top of the hole at the bottom of the bracket, then i would tap the top of the long bolt with a rubber mallet and it ended up pushing that tensioner Bolt that the pulley goes into behind the hose. So I ended up working it just took ****ing forever. I was able to loosen that up just enough to get the belt on, then tighten it. (Hope that makes sense)
The problem I'm running into now is that the new pump didn't come with a cap and I cannot find one that will fit anywhere. I ordered one off of Walmart and I'm now waiting over 3 days for it, and if this one doesn't fit I don't know what I'm going to do.

Cap secures from the outside, not the inside.

so, another thing, I cant exactly tell, but since the pressured line is now feeding into the bottom, it looks like it pretty close, if not resting against, the bottom of the intake manifold. I'm just worried that'll make the hose wear out or burn up. thoughts?

Where's the screen located? On the outlet from the pump?
