Default Power steering box?

Has anyone ever used a box from a jeep j20? Can it be done? How does it differ from the durango box?

apparently there are no more "real" J20 boxes left in parts stores, everyone gets J10 boxes.. which is pretty much the same as a xj box. at least, thats what i read on pirate 2 years or so ago. imho, there really isnt a reason to get a durango box, its big for the stock PS pump. all the people who get one and love it just had a shot stock box.

Have not heard of a j20 swap.I have heard of a zj grand cherokee swap. The zj pitmen arm gives you one inch of drop. The xj variable ratio box has a looser feel than the zj box. Its suppose to be a direct bolt on mod. Has anyone done this one yet?

If so its not very common, most talk about swapping in a Durnago box.

ZJ box is variable ratio just as the XJ box is. YJ is fixed ratio, durango box w/o plow is variable ratio, durango box with plow is fixed ratio.

My understanding is that you want the Durango box without plow.

yea, bc itll feel like stock. the fixed ratio is a big change, makes the steering way faster on center. the whole "full steering" thing is a toss up. some people get the ones with, some without, and people still get boxes that dont give them full steering. the durango has steering stops that kick in waay before ones on a xj d30 do. my old durango box gave me full steering, my friends didnt.

Interesting. I would've liked to have upgraded my box whenever it takes a dive.

I suppose there isnt much of a way to check...?

pull it out of the box when you get it and see how far it goes. like i said though, i dont see any reason to get it, the stock box is more than fine.

Mine is fine at the moment.

But since I'm never parting with THIS xj, I figure get the best parts I can. Until now I have not heard much else but good about the Durango box.

My dads box took a dump on him a weak ago. He is upgrading to the dakota/Durango box. We built a spacer plate and a plate for the outside out of 1/4". It'll probably get all tacked up tmrw and then fully welded the next day.

From a looks standpoint its only a tad bit bigger than the xj box. It was more of a why not upgrade. I think he plans on getting a smaller pulley for the power steering pump to help keep up with the bigger box.

do that. the stock pump really cant push the durango box to get any benefit. you can get a box thats 100x bigger than stock, youre still using the stock pump, and thats what gives you the power.

Only asked about the j20 box because I have a 74 j20 that I'm going to get rid of when I scrap the rest of my doner. And if I can use the box from it that would be nice. But I'll have to check and see if seals are still available for it

So I'm putting in the j20 box just removed it from the j20 today and I I'm going to try and get it sand blasted at a friends shop. And I found a rebuild kit online.

The only reason I am doing the swap is my box is shot. And I have this 74 J20 sitting in the back yard just rotting away and I've heard of the swap just never seen anyone who has done it, but I found someone on naxja who has done it so I figured since my truck is a combo of other jeep vehicles any way why not.
