I have a 1998 XJ Sport, and I want to replace the power antenna with a 13" antenna that has a screw in the end (it came with multiple screw options) (see picture)
The problem is, when I remove the power antenna, which means I remove the motor (actuator?) and the antenna as they are one piece, the only thing that is left on the fender is the rubber piece that i guess is for waterproofing? I think its called a grommet? Non native English speaker here so bear with me please.
So, there is no base in which I can screw the antenna. I have searched so much, but for the love of me I cannot find some kind of base that the antenna can be screwed on, and that has a cable that I can run to the passenger kick panel where I can connect it with the cable that comes from the radio.
Any insight would be much appreciated, and tell me if I can provide any more info to make it easier for you.
I would go to the junk yard and find an xj without the power antenna, of which there are many, and take the pieces needed. Otherwise consult a repair manual for the part numbers and order. Fair warning, those rubber antennas don't give you crap for reception. I would keep the power antenna, but that's just me.
Contact maker of antenna for maybe they sell the correct base. Or contact a car stereo place, or Ham radio store for what you need.
And yes, those rubber antennas give poor reception, and can break easily too when bent . You are attempting a down grade of your XJ. Just sayin'
A power antenna is such a treat, to witness it majestically rise forth from the fender, to see each percision made segment extend, like a space craft unfolding its antenna. Only when fully extended to the optimal length for reception does the process automatically stop. The wonder of it all! Then to have it all repeat in reverse, the mechanical wonder as it retracts is telling the driver..... " You have arrived, I will tuck myself safely away until summoned again".
What magic the modern world holds, all with the twist of a ****, you too can enjoy this marvel of engineering triumph.
And to think you give all this up for a short, weak, dull rubber thingy.
