Default Possible axle swap

I've been wanting to do the Ford 9 inch rear swap in my cherokee for awhile, and I found this while looking around, would this be a good start since he says sits already set up for a cherokee, also when I go to look at the axle what should I look for in particular, been doing alot of reading but I've only found what vehicles to look for, not what to look for on an already pulled axle. Any help and comments would be much appreciated, thanks guys.

Its kinda over priced to me and you'll have to put brakes on it and re gear your front axle to match its gear ratio. And honestly the best bolt in option is the stock chrysler 8.25 its factory in the non abs xjs.The 97 and newer is 29 spline and this axle can handle 35s no problem.

are you looking to eventually upgrade your front axle? the 9 has 5x5.5 bolt pattern so you'd need custom shafts or adapters to match the 30 up front.

check spline count of the shafts. 31 or 35 is what you want.

Stock splines on a 9 inch are 28 and 31 the 35 and 40 are aftermarket. And then you got the end housing size. You got big bearing from a truck the car small bearing and the big car aka torino which currie uses.

Including the 4.56 regear of the front to match, I am guessing it will be a $2500 Project.

Well right now I'm kinda torn, because I have the option to get an 8.25 for $100, but I also have the option to get a Dana 44 and Ford 9 inch from a 79 f150 for around 500. From what you guys have said and what more I've been looking into, just getting the Ford 9 inch in the back isn't really worth it unless you get the same 44 up front to. Now on top of that my welding skills aren't exactly excellent, I could use some practice. From my understanding there's a bit of welding to make the dana 44 and Ford 9inch fit the cherokee. I'm wondering should I hop on the two axle combo now, or just get the Chrysler 8.25 for now till I'm more adequately prepared to do the welding required to get the other to axles. Also on a side note would a wire fed welder be good enoiugh to do the welding needed on those axles?

My bad it's a 78 Ford, these are the other two options I have, and it says 600 for the other to axles not 400, but I might be able to give home 500 cash and he might take it, who knows.

Why do you think you need to go to a d44 for the front? The d30 with Chromo shafts hold up to 35" tires fairly reliably. The d30 would just need to be regeared (~$700) to match the rear.

A wire fed welder is fine for axle welding as long its rated enough of the thickness of steel. I used a wire fed Lincoln with Fluxcore for all my brackets on my 8.8.

$100 for an 8.25 is a good way to go as long as its gear ratio matches the front. If not, you will need to factor in the regearing costs.

It's not that I feel I need to it's more of a want, plus I really like the wide stance that the f150 axles give the cherokee. I also don't know 100% what my plans are for my cherokee in the future, so having the bigger axles on there just kinda prepares me for anything I wanna do to it. But the cherokee is also partly my DD so I can't have it down for more than a weekend, and I don't know how the bigger axles will ride on the road.

Just know that its going to take some major fabrication to run full width axles....and your XJ will no longer be street legal in many areas. Some cut the axle tubes down, but then you are buying new axle shafts, etc....its only money!

Well that's one thing I didn't realize, is the street legal because of how far out the tires will stick?

Well from what I got out of that is, if I do get the f150 axles it's more for a hardcore off-road only rig, that would take alot of fabricating and welding, which I already mentioned I'm not to good at. Also it's more for bigger tires then I'm running. So that being said I don't plan on beefing up my XJ to that extent, so I'll probably just go with the 8.25. Thank you for y'alls help.

I just have the 35s on it right now, and they seem to hold up pretty well around my parts so I'll probably just tick with 35s, unless I can regear to go one size higher without breaking an axle
