please someone help (diesel swap)
I have a 92 jeep cherokee laredo (4.0)
I want to put a diesel in it (please don't ask why )
I need to know what diesel engine would be easiest to swap with and all the other things I would have to do
Thank you in advance to your replies
Much appreciated

if you have to ask, you probably aren't cut out to do the swap.
the 4bt is a tall engine, I'm pretty sure you would have to go through the hood or lose some up travel in the suspension to clear the oil pan.

Has anyone actually done this after posting this question....
Look up xj Mercedes diesel swap.
Or you can see about a 4bt with an adapter to a Chevy Trans/tcase.

Engine: 4.0, bolt ons for days...
My friend DDs his TJ with a ax15 and 4bt. Everything down to the a/c and stock gauges work, everyone sells adapters and wiring is easy. Gets 22mpg commuting and 28-29 on the highway with 3.73s and 33s.
Have fun.

Not that practical:
- VM Motori 2.8L: Found in Euro Jeeps across the pond aren't that great and parts here for them blow.
- Liberty etc CRD: Amazingly expensive
- VW TDI: Lots of work, looks nice when done properly, but really lots of work especially if you have an electronic one
Practical:
- Cummins 4BT: very popular engine and easy to source the unit and parts. Mechanical diesel injection so no computer to move over. Pretty tall so I think 3" or 4" lift is a minimum.
- Mercedes OM617: 5 cyl with similar numbers to the 4.0, mechnical injection, easyish to find, pretty much bolts up with an adapter plate to the AX-15 (great resource: http://www.mercedesdiesel4x4.com/)
Don't forget you'll also need to look at regearing, the exhaust system, and fooling your ECU to stop whining & made the tach work if you're going to do it right.
